Paul Andrews, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour at McMaster University, is the lead author of a new study about anti-depressants in the journal Frontiers of Psychology.
He concludes that patients who have used anti-depressant medications can be nearly twice as susceptible to future episodes of major depression. Andrews and his colleagues studied dozens of previously published studies to compare outcomes for patients who used anti-depressants compared to those who used placebos.
Andrews says anti-depressants interfere with the brain’s natural self-regulation of serotonin and other neurotransmitters, and that the brain can overcorrect once medication is suspended, triggering new depression.
The USDA’s new food icon is not a pyramid this time but is a brightly colored plate that breaks a healthy diet into four main sections: fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins, with a small side of dairy.
It replaces the old Food Guide Pyramid, first launched in the early 1990s, then revamped in 2005. It was just too difficult for people to understand.
Toby Smithson, R.D., a national spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association stated that the plate is an improvement because it’s easy for non-readers to understand, which means young kids can learn the message early on and carry it with them throughout their lives.
The new food plate image reflects the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which promote measures like switching to fat-free or low-fat milk and opting for water over sugary drinks. The guidelines also recommend making sure that half your plate is filled with fruits and veggies — a recommendation that is one of the major points highlighted by the new graphic. You can download that report here: US Dietary Guidelines.pdf
Remember that the size of your plate matters and you should probably use eight or nine-inch plates. People should be paying attention to the different food groups, but they should also be watching their serving sizes.
According to a recent news report, some 5 percent of the 78 million boomers admit to abusing drugs – and experts are calling it a booming addiction. A recent government report showed that record numbers of baby boomers are in treatment for drug abuse.
The number of people over 50 treated for heroin abuse has more than doubled since 1992, those treated for cocaine addiction quadrupled, and even more shocking, five times as many boomers were in treatment for prescription drug abuse.
A lot of boomers grew up doing drugs, and experts said many never stopped – or are turning to them again to help cope with the normal stresses of aging.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, unlike other generations, boomers are facing a vast array of health problems, including high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and arthritis.
Listed below are four different alternative ways to overcome your drug addiction.
1) Heal Yourself With The Proper Instructions
In some cases you should not attempt to detox on your own. For instance, in cases of severe alcoholism, withdrawal can be life-threatening. You could experience the DTs (delirium tremens) and should be under the care of a professional addiction treatment facility.
Also, if you have been taking any benzodiazapenes, such as Valium or Xanax, seizures could occur so they should be under professional care.
If your condition is not too severe, you could try detoxing and then replenishing your brain (and body) with the proper nutrients. I highly recommend Dr. Gant’s book – End Your Addiction Now. It is the best book on the market and you can order it through Amazon. See the “Favorite Books” link on the right side of this page.
For smokers, there are 2 products that can help you kick the nicotine habit. First is the TobacPak supplement which heals the brain neurotransmitters. You can find that product here: Nupathways.com/nicotine-cessation. The second product is brand new – InstaCalms Tobacco Formula spray. Whenever you have a craving, you just spray into your mouth to take the cravings away. You can also get this at Nupathways.com (you may have to ask for it if it is not listed yet). Use the code HJ25 at checkout to get 25% off your total order.
2) See an Integrative Medicine doctor
Have an appointment with an Integrative and Functional Medicine doctor such as Dr Gant that can treat the whole body and not just throw more drugs at you. You can start here with a phone consult: cegant.com/wellness-assessment or see him in person here: NIHADC.com
3) Go to a Holistic Rehab center
I would call most rehab centers “re-toxification” centers. Go to a facility that can treat you in a holistic manner and truly help you get well. Here are 3 of the top drug rehab centers in the country:

Just in case young people don’t know about the famous actor Yul Brynner and his comments on smoking, here is a high light video with his comments.
Go to this page to find an unusual solution for kicking the nicotine addiction: Nicotine Cessation Solution. There are two products almost guaranteed to work.
Highly hallucinogenic, potentially lethal and legal – it’s important you learn about the newest designer drugs sweeping the nation. The street name is “Bath Salts,” but they were never intended for your tub. This powdery substance is packaged as “bath salt” to circumvent drug laws.
The salts contain two synthetic drugs, mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV, which mimic the effects of cocaine or meth.
Poison control centers around the country are being flooded with calls. Emergency rooms are inundated with people who’ve taken this stimulant. Most terrifyingly, this new drug craze is something almost anyone can purchase.
Easily found at gas stations and convenience stores, it is important to learn the many names of this drug to protect your family from its dangerous effects
Sold in packets of white powder with names like Vanilla Sky, Ivory Wave, Bliss, and White Lightning. They are usually snorted or smoked — not unlike cocaine or methamphetamine.
